the future of broadbandBroadband is branching out across the world and ADSL 2 and ADSL 2+ are currently being launched through Europe and Asia. They are even faster than regular ADSL broadband using a 24MB download speed and 1MB upload speed (depending on the distance of ones connection from the exchange). They run on regular ADSL lines and are fantastic for live video streaming, video conferencing and listening to digital radio seamlessly. Game enthusiasts will be among those who benefit from the unbroken connections on offer by the new ADSL 2 and 2+.

There are alternatives to broadband and standard ADSL connections. There is an ultra fast dial-up service offered by Virgin where they claim it works up to 5 times faster than normal dial-up. There is also satellite broadband and standard dial-up that is useful if your broadband connection goes down. A new policy has been introduced by the British Government called “The Wireless Scheme” and the primary objectives are to make the United Kingdom the most competitive and extensive broadband market. Ofcom is the regulator for the United Kingdom communications industry and they are required to ‘have regard’ to the desirability of encouraging the availability and use of high speed data transfer services in the UK. Ofcom keeps a close eye on all the ISP’s and recently threatened O2 with a fine of 40 million pounds in June 2008 if the company does not increase its 3G coverage. Ofcom are important in the up keep of good standards within the internet.
